Up until now, Marvel Studios have been content to stay in and around Earth, but they are heading to the far reaches of space with probably their biggest gamble so far, James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. Pre-production has been gearing up on the movie for some time now, with a lot of speculation on who the villain will be. Lee Pace, my favorite 'that guy actor', has been cast to menace the team, consisting of Starlord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and non humanoid members Rocket Racoon and Groot (no word on how they are being brought to life yet, with everything from puppetry, CGI, and even using a real racoon being thrown about) but his identity is been kept quiet at the moment.
Everybody has their own theory (mine is that he plays Micheal Korvac, an Omnipotent being from the far future), but one rumour has reared its head, and it makes a lot of sense. Reported by JoBlo, it is suggested that the main villain of the piece will be Ronan the Accuser, high ranking member of the blue skinned Kree Empire. Ronan has been a mainstay of the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe since 1967, first appearing opposite the Fantastic Four (this would have me believe his rights belong with Fox, who own all things FF, but he could exist in the same grey area as Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch, with both studios owning the rights), and he played a big part in several Avengers storylines, which saw the Kree go to war with other alien races (those Kree are quite war happy), with Earth caught in the middle. Ronan is quite a formidable villain, and would present a real threat to the Guardians, one Pace would no doubt absolutely kill. And if Ronan does appear, it could lead to the Kree becoming a major threat in future Marvel films. It has become clear that Marvel want to expand the more cosmic side of their movie universe, and introducing the Kree (or any other of the numerous alien races that inhabit the Marvel Universe) would be the perfect way to do that.
Guardians of the Galaxy is released 1st August 2014.
