After writing the pretty much straight forward romantic comedies Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Love Actually, Richard Curtis is throwing time travel into the mix for his thrid directorial outing (after The Boat That Rocked, and Love Actually) About Time. Domhall Gleeson stars as a young man who finds out he has inherited his father's (Bill Nighy) ability to time travel, and the first thing he uses it for is to get a girlfriend (Rachel McAdams, who, with this and The Time Travellers Wife, has the monopoly on romantic time travel movies).
I think this looks really good. I like how it hints that the father/son relationship might be just as important as the romantic one, and it has a very funny and clever twist on the mechanics of travelling through time. It is a tricky concept to pull off, but by keeping it simple, Curtis may just get it right. Bill Nighy seems to be on top form, and it is always great to see Domhall Gleeson in the lead role. I have had a lot of fun with Curtis' other movies in the past, so I'm looking forward to this one.
