Last September Tom lost his mind when he saw Dredd. The movie was generally well received but with an estimated budget of $35,000,000 and a worldwide gross of $35, 626, 525, financially it was a disaster. Recently Karl Urban (Dredd himself) said it was only the fans that could make a sequel. And no, this isn’t a Kickstarter project either. Instead there is an official petition as well as an official Facebook page, which offers fans to voice their opinions and let the big brass know they want to see more stories from Dredd.
While its a nice sentiment, Hollywood is about making movies, and unfortunately Dredd didn’t do the business when it mattered. Why would any studio invest in a movie just for fans, who obviously didn’t come out in as much force first time round. While the geek market is a lucrative one (Marvel movies spring to mind), Geeks are notoriously hard to motivate and get their asses into cinemas. Case and point being the rather brilliant Scott Pilgrim. On that note, surely Dredd could well see the light of day with somebody like Netflix. Either way, I’m afraid fans will have to cross more than their fingers, toes and balls for this one.
