Making his name with Saw, director James Wan has mostly stayed in the horror genre, stepping out briefly to make vigilante thriller Death Sentence, for little under a decade. This year, he delivered one of the most satisfying haunted house movies in recent memory with The Conjuring, and is following that up this Friday with Insidious: Chapter Two. He is stepping outside the genre again to direct next years Fast and Furious 7, but it's looking like this change of pace isn't going to be temporary. In a recent interview with Moviefone, he has said he is hanging up his horror hat, not wanting to be pigeon holed in one genre. "I'm going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. 'Conjuring' and 'Insidious 2' are my two last scary movies", he said, "I spent the last ten years of my life doing this. It's time for a change, for goodness sake!".
Elaborating further on his decision, he went on to explain, "Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you're known as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I'm a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films." I totally agree with this state of mind. Many a director, actor and actress are stuck in one genre now, and it is frustrating because you know they can do so much more. Wan's movies, The Conjuring especially with it's gorgeous camera work, have shown he has a style and flair that would work well in any genre, and I am very interested to see what he does with Fast and Furious 7.
