During the run up to Fede Alverez's Evil Dead remake, word reached us that director of the original franchise, Sam Raimi, was contemplating a third sequel to the the series, to live side by side with Alverez's new potential series. Then, Evil Dead producer Rob Tabert added further fuel to the fire, saying that it wouldn't be Evil Dead 4, but in fact Army of Darkness 2, a sequel to the third installment that swapped out the horror element of the first two for a more action adventure feel.
Now, Bruce Campbell, the hero of the original series and god to many an Evil Dead fan, has confirmed that the project is happening, as well as confirming he is invloved. Speaking to fans at Wizard World comic con in Nashville, he has this to say:
“The last one was twenty-two years ago. I just haven’t been racing to do it. Sam Raimi is just a little bit busy making the biggest movies in Hollywood. I used to be busy. Now I’m not. That’s why I’m here. Ash would have to stop occasionally from chasing some deadite to catch his breath. Maybe we could do that, I guess. That would be exciting. Fight in a walker. That would be alright. Hit them with my cane. Fake them out, have a fake heart attack, distract a zombie. I like it.”
While it does sound he is just messing around with the crowd, he then got serious, and added: "Alright sir, the answer is yes". While it could all fall apart, at the moment it seems Army of Darkness 2 is a go. I, for one, cannot wait. You may have heard me go on at length about Evil Dead 2 on a recent podcast (here for you hearing pleasure), so it is no surprise to hear that the original Evil Dead movies are among my favorite movies of all time, and news of a sequel to Army of Darkness has brightened up my day no end.
