I know, I know. Its like something you’d read in the gutter press. But get this as its a bit of a mind melt. The 9th annual Andy Kaufman Awards, held in the Gotham Comedy Club (fab club by the way) were underway with Andy’s brother, Michael Kaufman presiding over the awards, when he was asked did he thing Andy was still alive. To which he replied he didn’t know. Nothing mind melting about that, but here it comes.
Michael went onto say that while clearing out Andy’s things after his death, he found an essay about how Andy planned to fake his own death and how he’d reappear at a particular restaurant on Christmas Eve in 1999. Michael turned up on Christmas Eve at said restaurant and waited. No Andy, but someone did turn up with a letter addressed to him. The letter explained that Andy wanted to go into hiding and live a normal life as he’d met a woman and fallen in love with her and they now had a daughter, and that he didn’t want his brother or anybody else to say anything while their father was still alive.
After their father passed away this summer, a month later a woman called him and told him that Andy was alive and well and was watching the Andy Kaufman awards from a far. Ok, mind now completely melted. Whats left is now gonna get zapped.
Michael asked the audience if that woman had turned up at the awards, and lo and behold, after quite some time, a woman stood up at the back and made her way on stage. From there, he escorted the 24 year old off stage and asked the people respect her privacy.
Killy Dwyer who was one of this years finalists took to Facebook and wrote the following.
"Ok. Tonight was a mindfuck. Anyone who was there will attest. Andy Kaufman's daughter came onstage and claimed he was alive. It was. It was...I can't tell you how it was, only that it was as real as any reality that i've seen. and yeah. I get that it is - could - might all be a hoax. That was the only and last thing I want to say. it was fucking fucked up. She said he is alive and that the passing of his father this July made him want to reach out via her- to Michael, Andy's brother. She said he is watching the award entries, semi and finalists with great interest always. He just wanted to disappear. To be a father. To be an observer. As much as this seems like bullshit as I type it, it was as real as anything I've ever seen. There is video. It was chilling, upsetting and absolutely intriguing. I bawled my eyes out. The entire room was freaked out. It was, if nothing else, brilliant. and incredibly mindfuckng and AWESOME."
So thats the deal. Absolutely insane and brilliant. Just like Andy. I’m a huge Kaufman fan and have been for years and all of me would love to believe that all of this is true and Andy did indeed manage to pull off one of the pranks of the century. And you know what, fuck it, call me insane, I’m believing this.
What do you think?
