We continue our review into 2013, where myself and Tom take a look back at some of our favourite scenes. By the way, don’t forget to vote for YOUR favourite movie of the year in our poll. Click here to vote
First up Tom’s picks!
Django Unchained - “Now you can get the Marshall”
Quentin Tarantino has a way with characters and dialogue that, given the right actor, he can deliver scenes that jump off the screen. That is true for this early scene from Django Unchained, which sees bounty hunter King Schultz (Christoph Waltz, earning his best supporting actor Oscar here) collect a bounty in his inimitable style, nonchalantly murdering a man in cold blood before talking his way out of it, collecting $200 in the process.
The Lone Ranger – The Train Chase
The movie may have divided audiences, but there is no denying that the final action sequence in The Lone Ranger is a hell of a lot of fun. It's over ten minutes of over the top action, taking place across two fully functional steam trains, with the action zipping between Armie Hammers titular hero and Johnny Depp's Tonto (who even throws in a Captain Jack Sparrow pose for good measure). To cap it all off, the William Tell Overture plays uninterrupted over it, adding to the already palatable excitement.
Vic’s picks!
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - Dwarves in Barrels
Nothing but sheer exhilaration and excitement as Bilbo and the dwarves escape an Elven prison, being pursued by a bunch of Orcs and Elves. And from a visual effects point of view, an absolute credit to Weta! For me, it is my scene of the year!
Pacific Rim - Tanker Bat
Look, I’ll put it like this! A gigantic robot walks through downtown Hong Kong, trailing a gigantic oil tanker which it’ll use as a baseball bat against a giant monster. It’s as awesome as it sounds. An amazing visual feat from Industrial Light & Magic and of course it comes from the amazing mind of Guillermo Del Toro. Jaw droppingly incredible.
Iron Man 3 - Malibu Home Destruction
A full scale attack by the Mandarin on Tony Stark’s palatial malibu home will leave your jaw firmly on the ground as destruction befalls our Iron hero. With set piece after set piece, expertly crafted by Shane Black, this is one incredibly tense chapter in Iron Man 3. Not only does it have a wonderful showcase of love by Stark for Pepper Potts, it quickly goes back to the madness and destruction with the greatest use of a piano in a movie from the last few years.
