Where do you start a review, for a movie that is the animated movie of the year? Now, that I’ve mentioned that, off you go to buy tickets.
Right, there’s a few still reading. Ok then. Frozen is a wintery tale about Anna who teams up with Kristoff (along with his reindeer Sven) in an attempt to find her sister, Elsa, who has a mysterious power that enables her to create ice and snow at will. So after trapping the entire kingdom in an eternal winter, Elsa vanishes amd our trio set out to find her and bring a thaw to the never-ending chill. Accompanied by a talking snowman, Olaf, our bunch of heroes will have you crying, laughing, smiling and foot tapping from beginning to end.
Frozen is a monumental film for Disney. While Tangled attempted to forge old school and new school animation, and was successful to a point, Frozen has that absolute quintessential old school Disney feel to it with the modern look and style of 3D animation. It genuinely is a sight to behold as the characters are not only very likeable, but its like 2D cell drawings have been brought to life in front of our very eyes. And they have so much life and personality. Sven, the reindeer steals the show time and time again, with facial expressions that are priceless and amazing time and time again. Visually, this movie will knock you on your ass. It really is that good. Even the supporting characters, including a gigantic Snow monster are phenomenal with as much attention to detail as the main cast. As for the 3D? Well that works especially well here as well with fantastic little gimmicks and plenty of depth. It really is a great example of how to do things right. In any case, the Mickey Mouse short that goes with Frozen, is worth the price of admission alone!
Coupled with these amazing visuals and animation is a soundtrack that once again harks bark to a by gone classical Disney. Rousing singing numbers and slow and moody solos fill Frozen from beginning to end and do a wonderful job of taking you on a rollercoaster of emotions. The vocal cast including Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad are a perfect fit for their characters, especially gad who’s one liners (as Olaf) will have you choking on your popcorn time and time again.
This is nothing but a triumph for Disney. They have achieved something they have long set out to do, and that’s combine the classic Disney with modern animation techniques. They have raised the bar incredibly highly, not only for themselves but for other animation studios as well.
With enough running jokes that both adults and kids alike will get, a fantastic touching story, an epic soundtrack and amazing visuals Frozen is the animated movie of the year.
