All comic book fans should stand up and take notice of this. Neil Gaiman's mature readers series from DC's Vertigo imprint, Sandman is considered an absolute masterpiece in the world of comic books, a 75 issue epic spanning several worlds telling the story of Dream, the personification of all dreams and stories, and his all powerful siblings, The Endless. Gaiman's imagination ran wild with Sandman, creating memorable characters like living nightmare Corinthian (a terrifying creature complete with teeth for eyes), the self explanatory Merv Pumpkinhead, and Dream's sister Death (yes, that Death), a perky, goth version of the character that hadn't been before or since (she has become the most popular character from the series, even starring in two of her own mini series), and tales that jumped genres from horror to fantasy with every issue, that went far beyond the usual comic book fare.
Rumours of a movie version of the series has been doing the rounds for some time now, with even a Death movie, High Cost of Living, starring Selma Blair in the lead role at one point. Now there is major movement on Sandman, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt not only in talks with Warner Bros. to star (donning the goth wig and white face paint to portray Dream), but to direct as well. He has shown he is a tremendous directing talent with Don Jon, and I am really interested to see what he would do with this project. Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer will provide the screen play. This is a project I will be keeping a very, very close eye on, so expect to hear more on this as soon as it breaks.
