With Adam Sandler's latest string of 'comedies' being lacklustre at best, it is easy to forget the actor has some serious dramatic chops, with the likes of Funny People, Punch Drunk Love, and Reign Over Me under his belt. He'll be showing off that side again in Tom McCarthy's (The Station Agent, Win Win) fantasy tinged comedy/drama The Cobbler, taking the titular role as a lonely man whose entire life has been spent repairing shoes in his small shop in New York City. But his life takes a turn for the better when he discovers a family heirloom that literally gives him the ability to "walk in another man's shoes" and see the world differently. Our first image from the project doesn't give much away, showing Sandler in costume outside the shoe repair shop.
Sandler is joined by Dustin Hoffman, Method Man, Melonie Davis, and Steve Buscemi, marking the ninth time the pair have worked together. McCarthy is a deft hand with mixing the light and sweet with heavy drama, and when Sandler is reined in he can put in a great performance. This should be one to watch out for. No release date has been given as of yet.
