Yesterday, we were thrown for quite the loop when Michael Douglas was announced as taking the role of
Hank Pym (the first character to don the costume of the size-changing hero) in Marvel Studio's Phase Three kick-off movie Ant-Man. It's a casting announcement none of us could called. Hell, I would never have imagined him taking a role in any comic book, but here we are. Now, in an interview with
Reuters, the actor has talked about what drew him to the role, which included doing something his 13 year old son Dylan could see. "I've been dying to do a Marvel picture for so long", he said, "The Script is really fun, the director is really good. Dylan will love it. He'll have a picture he can see." He further went on to explain he wanted to surprise audiences and studios alike, saying "Sometimes - like (when) they didn't see you for Liberace - you've got to shake them up a a little bit and have some fun."
Nothing much is known about the script from Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, other than it is based on the classic story To Steal An Ant-Man, which featured two heroes sharing the mantle. With Douglas announced as Hank Pym, I think it's safe to assume that Paul Rudd, the first actor to sign on for the project, will be playing Scott Lang, a thief who steals the Ant-Man costume to save his daughter's life. Unless, Marvel decides to throw us for another loop.
Ant-Man hits the big screen on July 31st 2015.
