As most of you know, Russell Crowe did a flying visit to a number of cities on this side of the pond over the weekend. He started in Dublin and finished in London, taking in Edinburgh and Cardiff as the day went on.
Then he was asked what some might call a really dumb question by Niamh Walsh for Evoke.ie. She asked if his team (he owns the Sydney Rabbitohs) would ever play against the Irish rugby team. In fairness, it wasn’t exactly a dumb question. No doubt he was being asked left right and center about building boats and the weather, so this question may have been a welcome one on the red carpet. And thus a question like this, a potential ice breaker, may have well opened up the Gladiator actor a bit more. So, if that was her thinking, fair play. Clever. Very clever. So far so good…right?
From there Russell explained that his team plays Rugby league and not Rugby union. Then it all went a bit pear shaped for Niamh. She followed up that up with “But, just not as a kind of a test match just to get the two loves together.” Noah them came back stating “You understand what I’m saying? Its a different sport” and he went on to explain the difference. And had a bit of a smile about it.
At that point poor old Niamh felt it wise to have a go and pointed out that Crowe had referred to Ireland as being part of the UK. And that point things more or less came to a grinding halt. Why she came back with this is anyones guess. Its like a getting a taxi and the taxi driver asks you where you want to go and you respond by vomiting. Pointless. Anyway….
So, when you start digging a hole, the best thing you can is dig deeper. And that’s what Niamh decided to do, via Twitter, stating that at least she knows Geography. And then, for reasons unbeknownst to me (maybe he was searching for her on Twitter or god knows what) Russ comes online and fires the below response.
I just find it very bizarre that one of the biggest actors in the world, who WAS NOT referenced in her tweet magically appears and has a response.
And thats that. And of course, the video has gone viral and things are blown out of all proportion. Watch the video below and judge for yourself. As someone who has spent over a decade interviewing celebs, having a go is pretty pointless. The best thing to do in a situation like this is just roll with the punch and make a joke of it. Crowe seemed to be willing to stick around but as soon as the claws came out, good night. Anyway, nobody is dead.
