Hugh Jackman has been the Wolverine for fourteen years, portraying him seven times, including the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. It's a long time to play one character, including a hell of a lot of work to stay in peak shape for, and has to come to an end eventually. Speaking to SFX magazine, Jackman talked about the possibility of playing the character for an eighth time, saying "I'm excited to see what they come up. But I haven't signed on. I'm genuinely at that point where unless it's better than the last one I'm not going to do it." This puts uncertainty on the project, which has already signed on a returning James Mangold to direct, and is scheduled for a March 3rd 2017 release date.
Speaking further, Jackman went on to talk about the possible story of a third Wolverine movie, giving the impression that if it did go ahead, it would be his last. "We're talking it through. I still am very ambitious for the character. And tonally I feel like we corrected the ship with the last one. But I feel we can still go further, in a way. If I did one, I'm 99.9% sure it would be the last, so that will inform what it is for me." It's understandable he feels he has reached the point where he's ready to drop the character, and I get the feeling he wants to bow out on a high note, so time will tell if X-Men: Days of Future Past will be the last time we see him pop his claws.
