It's been over two weeks since it was announced that Edgar wright and Marvel Studios were parting ways on the long in development Ant-Man over creative differences, leaving doubts on whether we would ever see the size changing hero on the big screen. Marvel were adamant they were on track for the July 17th 2015 release date, but a growing shortlist of directors, including Adam McKay (Anchorman), Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), and Nicholas Stoller (Bad Neighbours), turning down the chance to replace Wright.
But now Marvel Studios have indeed found their director in the form of Yes Man and The Break-Up director Peyton Reed. Not exactly the choice I would have expected, but they have a good track record of picking directors from out of left field. On top of that, Adam McKay has been brought on as "script contributor", no doubt revising Wright's and Joe Cornish's existing script. This development may bring some truth to the rumours that Wright left over changes made to his script. Reed's appointment will no doubt rile a lot of Wright fans, and add further to many Internet commentator's assertations that this will be Marvel's first flop. But, tell you what, I'm still looking forward this. Sure, not as much as when Wright was attached, but Marvel Studios have treated me well up to this date with their cinematic catalogue, and judging from the synopsis in belows press release, Ant-Man is going to be a hell of a lot of fun!
When Marvel’s “Ant-Man” hits theaters July 17, 2015, director Peyton Reed will help shepherd the hero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a cast led by Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, with
writer Adam McKay contributing to the film’s script.
Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
