Not only did it kick off the craze in the early 2000's for remaking Japanese horror movies, The Ring is also one of the best Japanese horror remakes out there, giving the original a run for its money. The Ring Two was a major step down in quality, even with the original's director Hideo Nakata behind the camera. After that, the bubble burst for The Ring and its like, meaning we would never see Samara and her malevolent video tape, which kills viewers seven after watching, again. But it looks like The Ring franchise is being resurrected, with The Hollywood Reporter printing reports that Before the Fall and the upcoming The Crow remake director F. Javier Gutierrez has signed on for The Ring 3D. Yes, The Ring, like pretty much every other famous horror franchise, is getting the 3D treatment, potentially making the scenes of Samara crawling out of a t.v absolutely amazing.
The project is still in development, with no script written yet. But it has been nearly nine years since the last installment, do we need another The Ring movie? Personally, I'm afraid it will just become a generic horror franchise. While The Ring Two was a disappointment, it did at least try to go the way of the Japanese movies and the books it is based on, and deliver something crazy and unexpected. I just have a feeling the plan is to rehash the originals plot of a race to turn back the video tapes curse. Guess we'll see when The Ring 3D finally hits the big screen.
