He is one of the most impressive martial artists on the face of the earth. His speed and intensity is off the charts and Tony Jaa has now signed on for the Kickboxer remake. The original 1989 movie starred Jean Claude Van Damme and while I was pretty young when I saw it, the movie had some fantastic fight sequences and has stayed with me ever since.
Dave Bautista and Georges St-Pierre are also on board and will star alongside Alain Moussi who is playing Kurt Sloane and must learn the ancient kick boxing art of Muay Thai in order to avenge his brother. The movie is directed by Stephen Fung who is well suited for this type of movie, with the likes of Tai Chi Zero and House Of Fury under his belt. But why he’s doing this in 3D is beyond me. Besides the obvious flying bones and blood, I’m at a loss as to why the movie will be offered up in three dimensions. Still though, Fung might do something completely different with the format, but I’m not holding my breath.
The movie is yet to get a release date, but given the majority of the effects are practical, once the cameras start rolling this will be a speedy production. Expect it early to mid 2015.
