A serious game-changer for the traditional film distribution model, Netflix have announced that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend, the sequel to Ang Lee's martial arts epic, will premiere exclusively on the online streaming service, as well as select IMAX screens across the globe simultaneously, on August 28th 2015. This is a turn of events that is not entirely unexpected, considering Netflix turned how we watch original programming on its head with the likes of House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Arrested Development season 4. It will be interesting to see how this particular distribution deal develops going forward, as this could seriously impact on how films are released in the future.
In press release from Netflix, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend is the first of several major films backed by Netflix to take advantage of this particular distribution model. The movie will be directed by renowned martial arts choreographer, having worked on The Matrix Trilogy and Kill Bill Vol.1 & 2, and Tai Chi Master director Yuen Wo-Ping, and will see Michelle Yeoh reprise her role from the original, alongside Donnie Yen (an martial arts legend whose Hollywood work includes Blade II and Shanghai Knights), in a tale of lost love and legendary swords set against the backdrop of an epic battle between good and evil. As well as the announcement, Netflix also released the first images from the movie, featuring Yeoh and Yen, which can be seen below.
