The directorial debut of screen writer and novelist Alex Garland (Sunshine, Never Let Me Go, and 28 Days Later), Ex Machina sees Domhnall Gleeson play Caleb, a programmer for an internet search giant, who wins a competition to spend a weekend with the company's reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). But upon meeting Batemen, Caleb realises he has been selected as the human component in a Turing Test to evaluate whether or not his latest experiment in artificial intelligence, Ava (Alicia Vikander), possesses a human consciousness.
This story is nothing new, but Garland has always had the knack of offering unique twists on sci-fi concepts. The first trailer does promise a tense thriller in amongst the sci-fi trappings, with some great performances from our three leads.
