A few months back, Jena Malone was spotted on the set of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, directed by her Sucker Punch director Zach Snyder, fueling speculation that the actress has a part in the upcoming first step on the road to a DC Cinematic Universe. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed she will have a mystery role in the movie. Of course, this has put the rumour mill into overdrive, with the most popular being that she will be portraying Carrie Kelly, a female version of Batman's sidekick Robin from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns mini series. Snyder is already drawing from The Dark Knight Returns for the look of Batman's costume, and even used an excerpt from the series' final issue to announce the project at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, so it's a rumour that could have some legs.
Of course, it's all speculation until we hear something concrete, but another comic book character being added to the movie seems like a bit much. I mean, on top of Supes, Bats, and Lois Lane, there is Wonder Woman, Alfred Pennyworth, Perry White, Martha Kent, Lex Luthor, Mercy Graves, Aquaman, and Cyborg. That is already lot of well known characters to juggle in one movie, especially when the focus is meant to be on Superman and Batman. Snyder could very well have it all under control, but at the moment it feels like overkill. To me, at least.
