The Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser trailer hit yesterday, and has been watched so many times by us here at The Movie Bit that the ultra creepy rendition of Pinocchio's "I've Got No Strings" has been running through our heads on loop all day. It may have just been a teaser trailer, but repeat viewings has made it clear that a fair amount of information was related to us. So, sit back and lets this comic book nerd with way too much time on his hands guide you through, with some spoilers relating to information from the comics, what to expect when the Age of Ultron makes it's way to the big screen next year.
It's a dark time for The Avengers
Ultron is one of The Avengers greatest foes, so things won't be easy for our heroes this time round. But this trailer sees our heroes at their lowest ebb, with infighting a plenty, and the ominous sight of Cap's shield in pieces letting us know things will be a lot darker this time round.
Tony's ego catches up with him
Tony Stark has always considered himself the smartest person in the room, and with good reason. But it seems he's ultimately responsible for this new threat, born from his desire to create a global peacekeeping force. The drone Ultron takes over has the familiar "A" symbol on it's chest, suggesting his solution was to use an army of machines to carry out his mission for peace. Tony's mission also seems to be creating contingencies for his friends ever going out of control, which explains the Hulkbuster, which is essentially a suit for the Iron Man suit. Expect fallout from this course of action to be felt as the Marvel Cinematic Universe marches ever forward.
The twins aren't to be trusted
The last time we saw Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch, at the end of Captain America: the Winter Soldier, they were prisoners of Hydra. While we expected them to be soon freed from their shackles, I don't think we saw them trading one bad guy for another, as we see them being a bit too chummy with Ultron.
But even he can't trust them, as we soon see them fighting on the side of angels. It's clear that they're loyalty is a bit on the flexible side, so can they really be trusted?
Ultron gets several upgrades.....
A trait of Ultron in the comics is that every time he makes an appearance, he has received an upgrade. The Avengers essentially fight a different version each time. His introduction in the movie sees a homage to his comic book look, mainly in the gaping and unmoving mouth, as he emerges from the shadows to gate crash an Avengers party.
Later we see him in what we can only assume is his final form, bad ass and ready for battle. Couple that with James Spader's menacing voice over, and Ultron is one hell of a villain.
.....and he's brought plenty of friends
Any villain worth their salt has an army at his or her disposal, and Ultron has an entire fleet of drones at his, ready to wreak havoc for their master.
Andy Serkis joins the party
When Andy Serkis was first announced to have a starring role, it was understandably kept under wraps, but not expected be a major one. But there he is in the trailer, sporting one hell of a beard, suggesting he plays a bigger role than originally thought. One rumour than has gained some serious legs is that he plays Ulysses Klaw (he bears an uncanny resemblance to the character's most recent incarnation in the animated The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes), an expert when it comes to the miracle metal Vibranium, which makes up most of Captain America's shield. This is what we can only assume is coating Ultron's hand at the start of the trailer.
If Serkis is indeed playing Klaw, this opens up some serious questions. Klaw is a major enemy of the Black Panther, whose country of origin, Wakanda, holds the biggest supply of Vibranium. Could we be seeing the introduction of the Black Panther, who we do know will be getting his own movie somewhere down the line? And if so, will be seeing more of Serkis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Black Widow's past plays a major role
Black Widow has had a complicated past in the comics, including been brainwashed by the Russian Government to believe she was once a ballerina to gloss over the fact that her childhood was spent being trained as the perfect assassin. The random shot of a group of ballerinas in amongst all the action does suggest that her past will be delved into. Will we see how red her ledger actually is?
