I think we were all gearing up for Avatar 2's release next year, especially after James Cameron had some very enthusiastic words to say about it late last year, but it looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer for it with Cameron revealed work needed to be done on all three Avatar sequels putting back the release date by one year, meaning we won't see it till December 2017. Speaking at an event held by the New Zealand (which is the new home of Pandora) Screen Advisory Board, Cameron said, "There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across the three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film. We're writing three simultaneously. And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one and then make up another one after that and parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the creature and the environments."
The original plan was to shoot Avatar 2, 3, and 4 simultaneously, releasing them a year apart. While the time frame has been back by this delay, it is still expected for this plan to be still in place, meaning we will be taking multiple trips to Pandora in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
