Whiplash was a pleasant surprise when it entered this year's awards race, picking up mutiple awards including bagging a well deserved Oscar for J.K. Simmons, but it began life as a short film, basically a scene from the feature script he had written, which won director Damien Chazelle the Short Film Jury Prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. On the strength of the short, Chazelle was able to secure funding for a feature length, and the rest is history. The short has finally made its way online, and it is a full little curiosity, and really interesting to see where the final product came for.
