Fast & Furious 7 Review

SHARE:

As far as movie franchises go, The Fast & Furious films are probably best described as a guilty pleasure for most of us. Terrible acting, ludicrous plots, an ever more indestructible roster of characters, the series would have slipped into movie obscurity if they weren't so damn fun.

Picking up where the last movie left off (though a coherent timeline has never been something the writers lose sleep over) Toretto, O Conner and Hobbs have all returned to their respective lives, only to find their worlds turned upside down by the older, badder brother of Fast 6 villain Own Shaw. The Fast & Furious family find themselves hunted and being picked off by Deckard Shaw, while at the same time being enlisted by the CIA to recover a piece of tech called the God's Eye that could help them turn the tables on their foe.

Statham is by far the series most dangerous and formidable baddie, while all of the returning cast slip into their roles with such ease, it's easy to see why they consider themselves a family. From Johnson's hulking agent Hobbs, to Diesel's gravel-voiced pack leader, all involved know what's expected of them and they embrace the lunacy of the story so wholly, it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement of it all.

The set pieces are spectacular, and can be summed up in two simple words; Fuck physics. If you're going to get hung up on the fact that men endure bone-wrenching smashes and walk away unscathed, or that cars give a hearty two-fingered salute to gravity, then stay at home. Fast & Furious 7 raises the bar for insane stunts and jaw dropping vehicular carnage, and laughs in the face of the laws of nature while doing so.

It's not perfect by any stretch though. For every action sequence that leaves you with an idiotic grin on your face, there's a tonal shift and monologue about the values of family and sticking together and some of it is to be expected. There was always going to be the issue of Paul Walker's untimely passing that halted filming for 5 months and almost derailed the project completely. Walker's character has been the beating heart and soul of this franchise since it's humble beginnings back in 2001 and the filmmakers and cast have done a great job of completing the movie (his brothers came on board as body doubles) and leaving a genuinely touching tribute to their friend in doing so.

Strapping in for one last ride, Vin Diesel and Co. absolutely deliver on the promise of bigger and better. A globe-hopping adventure to rival any spy franchise out there, Fast & Furious 7 is a fully leaded, turbo-charged blast through the streets of LA and the skyscrapers of Abu Dhabi. Louder, bolder, and every bit as indestructible as the cars they race around in, Toretto and his crew prove that when it comes to pure entertainment, thrills and adrenaline, Fast & Furious 7 leaves everything else for dust.
