Coming across like the love child of Pineapple Express and The Bourne Identity, the first NSFW for action comedy has come our way, putting Jesse Eisenberg in the shoes of a highly trained CIA sleeper agent who has fallen deep into his cover of a go nowhere stoner. When the time has come to activate him, it sees his life and the life of his girlfriend (Kristen Stewart) put in serious danger .
Written by Chronicle’s Max Landis and with Project X’s Nima Nourizadeh, American Ultra’s high concept (geddit?) shows a hell of a lot of promise as it gleefully subverts some of the usual action thriller cliches, and there are plenty of laughs to be had, especially from Topher Grace playing a pretty fun villain.
