The first poster came our way earlier, and now we have the trailer for Ericson Core’s (Invincible) Point Break remake, and they weren’t lying when they said this was just inspired by the 1991 action classic. Apart from character names and some minor plot similarities, this differs in some really big ways from the original, especially with the Ex-President’s now recast as extreme athletes looking to upend the global economy.
From an action point of view, this promises to be absolutely stunning, taking a page or two from Fast & Furious’ book and delivering some over the top set pieces, with the mid-air sequences looking absolutely spectacular. But it seems to be playing everything a bit too straight and serious, which renders some lines, especially Bodhi’s (Edgar Ramirez) proclamation of the only law he follows, as incredibly cheesy.
I was incredibly sceptical of this when I first heard about it, and this trailer hasn’t changed that. Sure, some of the stunts are incredibly promising, but everything else about this just screams generic action thriller that will only get recognition because of its famous title.
Released: 25th December (U.S.)/ 8th January 2016 (IRL/U.K.)
Synopsis: In Alcon Entertainment’s fast-paced, high-adrenaline action thriller “Point Break,” a young FBI agent, Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey), infiltrates a cunning team of thrill seeking elite athletes, led by the charismatic Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez). The athletes are suspected of carrying out a string of staggering crimes that kill innocent people and send the world’s economy into a tailspin.
Deep undercover, and with his life in imminent danger, Utah strives to prove they are the callous architects of these inconceivable crimes.
The film is replete with the most daring athleticism ever seen in a motion picture. These action adventure feats are performed by extreme athletes representing the world’s best in class in big-wave surfing, wingsuit flying, sheer-face snowboarding, free rock climbing, and high-speed motorcycling.
