The directorial debut of Catfish: The T.V. Show’s Max Joseph, We Are Your Friends, at first glance, may look the usual cliched underdog story of one young guy trying to make it big, in this case in the electronic dance music scene that was a huge deal in the late 2000’s, and I myself will admit that I let out the exclamation “Great, more pretty people with pretty people problems” when the trailer started.
But we really can’t overlook the Zac Efron factor here. He’s come a long way since High School Musical, and a few missteps withstanding, he’s proven a very competent actor that has more to offer than just bellowing out pop songs on the Disney Channel. On top of that, Joseph seems to be imbuing proceedings with a stylish flourish that should keep things interesting.
