Towards the end of last year, Orlando Bloom let slip that he might be returning for the fifth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales. While not many people would call themselves Will Turner fans (I will admit the character was quite flat), he did help ground the first three movies as a nice counter point to Johnny Deep’s manic Captain Jack Sparrow. You only have to look at On Stranger Tides to see that this is true. While it was uber successful, it was weakened by the focus being solely on Jack. So, Orlando Bloom announcing at D23 that he’s onboard for the latest instalment of the highly successful franchise, yeah, I’m okay with that.
The last time we saw Will, he was made the immortal captain of the Flying Dutchman and cursed with only stepping foot on dry land to visit his beloved Elizabeth once every ten years. It will be interesting to see how he fits into the story (my guess is his heart is unearthed by Javier Bardem’s villainous Captain Salazar), and I do hope he will receive a large enough role, and not just there for a brief cameo.
D23 also gave us our first look at the movie’s logo, with that faithful skull getting a shiny makeover. Check it out below.
Released: July 6th 2017
