J.J. Abrams has been talking to Entertainment Weekly and spoke about Star Wars Episode IX and specifically about the role of director. From what we've seen so far, Abrams has done a phenomenal job with Star Wars The Force Awakens, so he's a natural choice to keep sitting in the directors chair. Tragically, this is not to be however.
"No, I’m not going to direct Episode IX, as much as I am deeply envious of anyone who gets to work with this group of people on the future movies.”
However, if one recalls, the director also said he wasn't going to direct The Force Awakens either. And look how that turned out.
With Abrams out of the picture (no pun intended I swear) it does leave a clear playing field. That said, Hollywood rumblings point towards Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow working his magic on Star Wars Episode IX. And let's not count out Rian Johnson either. Johnson is tasked with bringing Episode 8 to cinema screens and could well be in the running to do Episode 9.
Personally, and yes there is a big dollop of hyperbole here, Abrams has been nothing but full of passion and conviction for the Star Wars movie that we all thought we'd never see. And while his producer schedule is pretty full (from Mission Impossible 6 to Star Trek: Beyond) his director schedule is wide open! I wouldn't count him out either. REGARDLESS of what he says!
