The practice of short films making the jump to the big screen is nothing new (Deadpool and Rauri Robinson’s The Leviathan being the most recent examples), but when they’re as impressive as The Garden you can’t really fault it. A sci-fi re-imagining of John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, the VFX heavy short, made for $30,000, has being picked up by Polly Johnson and Warner Bros. based Polymorphic Pictures with an eye to turn it into a new sci-fi franchise.
Following a group of explorers searching for a new home after discovering Earth’s sun is dying, the proof of concept video also included a feature script by director E.B. Rhee and producer Aaron Strongoni, meaning the heavy lifting of fleshing out the core idea is already done. You can find the short below, and there’s no denying there’s a lot that can be done with the concept, with the visuals being incredibly accomplished for a low budget short where most of the crew worked for free.
