Steven Spielberg has been a busy man of late. Right after he finished his fourth collaboration with Tom Hanks, Bridge of Spies, he went onto film an adaption of Roald Dahl’s The BFG. Now, another book adaption is calling him, with the director officially signed on for Ready Player One, based on Ernest Cline’s critically sci-fi novel of the same name. What’s more, the movie is set for a December 15th 2017 release date.
The novel is set in the year 2044, where most of humanity spends its days finding solace in OASIS, a sprawling virtual reality space. Wishing to escape his life, Wade Watts attempt sto solve the decades old puzzle left by OASIS’s late creator, who stipulated in his will that whoever solves it will be given control and management of the virtual utopia. Basically, it’s like owning the Internet. The striking thing about Cline’s novel is how geek friendly it is, steeped in pop culture references, mainly from the 80’s, and really who better to steer it to the big screen than the man who created a good chunk of the pop culture of that era. With Ready Player One set for the holiday season, be under no doubt that this will be an event, one I can’t wait for.
