Way back in 1997, four years before Shrek was released and became the ground breaking animated hit it did, it was going down a vey different route with Chris Farley as the original voice for everybody’s favourite grumpy yet lovable ogre. After his untimely death laster that year, the comedian was replaced, despite completing the bulk of his voice duties, by his former Saturday Night Live co-star Mike Meyers, who took the role in a completely different direction that had a major impact on the character development and story going forward.
Farley’s work on Shrek has been unseen until now, with an early story reel from 1997 coming online, showing us what Farley’s take on the character would have been like. His 'angry but still a sweetie deep down' version is certainly different from Meyer’s more cynical and acerbic character, but it’s certainly easy to see why Farley was chosen for the role.
