Fresh off Kingsman: The Secret Service, it seems Matthew Vaughn will be staying in the spy genre for a bit longer with his next film. No, not Kingsman: The Secret Service 2 (that’s still coming, don’t worry), but I Am Pilgrim, an adaption of the 2014 best selling debut novel from The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Dead Calm, and Payback screenwriter Terry Hayes (you can listen to our interview with Hayes about the book here). Following a veteran spy, codenamed Pilgrim, called out of retirement to tackle a cunning terrorist, production is slated to begin next year.
I Am Pilgrim will see Hayes on screen writing duties, and with him currently working on a follow-up novel, we could see be seeing the beginnings of a new franchise. And there’s no better person than Vaughn to potentially kick it off. Of the five movies he has directed, three have led to at least one sequel (the aforementioned Kingsman, Kick-Ass, and X-Men: First Class), he has a good track record of getting franchise up off the ground. And, if Vaughn can bring at least a fraction of the style he applied to those movies, we’re in for one hell of a ride.
