It was only a few weeks ago that Minions reached $1 billion worldwide, and things are getting even better for the gibberish spouting, banana loving little guys, with a record $20 million opening in China propelling the movie to second place of the highest grossing animated films of all time. With $1.08 billion under it’s belt, it unseats Toy Story 3, which grossed $1.06 billion, but it has a long way to go to challenge the current record holder, with Frozen ruling the roost with $1.27 billion.
When Minion was released this Summer, I don’t think anyones saw it doing as well as it is. But that’s been Universal’s Summer really, with Fast & Furious 7 and Jurassic World also coming out of no where and doing way better than expected (who really saw both setting records for reaching $1 billion worldwide coming?). It’s safe to say 2015 has been a very good year for the studio.
