Hot on the heels of the news that
Pom Klementieff will be joining Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in an unknown, yet key, role, Variety has shred with us that Marvel Studios reached out to Matthew McConaughey to take on the villain role in James Gunn's highly anticipated sequel.....and he passed on it. With the fact the McConassaince has given the actor license to pick and choose his roles, you can’t really blame him for turning down the part, but the fact that he was even approached does raise some interesting questions. Sure, big name actors joining the MCU is nothing new when you consider James Spader, Robert Redford, Michael Douglas, and Ben Kingsley have all signed on the dotted line for Marvel, but you really can’t get bigger than McConaughey right now. So, were they just going to use him once, and let that be that? Or was he eyed for a bigger role in the MCU as a whole, maybe taking over from Josh Brolin when Thanos takes his possible bow once the Infinity War is over? We might never know, but it’s fun to imagine what could have being.

As for who he could have played, the role was never disclosed, but he was likely tapped to play Peter Quill’s father, who we will finally see after being teased so much in the original movie. While the comics has revealed him to be Jason of Spartex, Gunn has said time and time again his identity will be different in the movie, with any number of characters being possible candidates. With McConaughey turning down the role, the search for a suitable consist remains ongoing, but with the film going into production in February of next year, expect a decision to be made sooner rather than later.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes our way May 5th 2017.
