Said to be the final part of the trilogy that began with First Class, Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse promises some dark times for the mutant heroes, with the long awaited big screen appearance of the team’s most fearsome comic book foe. But how dark are these times you ask. Well, peruse the official synopsis below (found in an announcement of the movie’s partnership with M&M’s of all things) for a hint of what is to come:
Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
The movie seems to be sticking pretty closely to Apocalypse’s comic book roots, but dig through it and you'll find a plot eerily similar to the last two movies: a powerful threat forces Professor X to team with his enemies to stop the world from being taken over. Sure, the only way to go with Apocalypse would be to see him vie for global domination, but it just feels like something we’ve seen many times before. But, who knows, I could eat my words when the movie is released on May 27th 2016.
