Sci-fi and Irish film aren’t two words that you see together too often. Sure, recent years have seen some Irish filmmakers dabble in the genre, but by and large, science fiction coming out of the Emerald Isle is far too rare. Which makes this proof of concept trailer for proposed feature Ayamé all the more refreshing. Coming from the mind of director Conor Maloney, the story concerns an Earth of the near future treatened with destruction, and the complications that arise during the military’s exodus of the planet. It’s a concept far too big to boiled down to one five minute video, but Maloney has done a great job of capturing the tone and the look of world in his head, and created something visually stunning that pays homage to giants of the genre, especially Alien and Akira. All wrapped up with the dulcet tones of John Hurt. Hopefully, we get to see this on the big screen sometime in the future.
