Filming is well underway on Marvel Studios’ Phase Three entry Doctor Strange, but the cast is still been finalised with The Wrap revealing two new additions to the already stellar cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelson, and Michael Stuhlbarg. The publication reports that Amy Landecker (t.v. show Transparent) and martial artist Scott Adkins (The Expendables 2) have signed for as yet undisclosed roles. While we can only speculate at this stage, it would be a good bet to say Landecker might be play Clea, love interest to Cumberbatch’s Master of the Mystic Arts. When McAdams was cast, popular theory was that she would be playing Clea, but persistent rumours suggest she will be playing healer to the super heroes Night Nurse.
Adkins, on the other hand, is a much more exciting addition. He is an absolutely gifted martial artist, and its safe to say his role in the movie will be very action heavy. The Doctor Strange comics don’t really have a character that lends itself to an actor of Adkins particular skills, except for maybe one. Introduced in mini series Doctor Strange: The Oath, Brigand is a thief for hire, backed up by incredible acrobatic prowess and an array of mystical weaponry. By virtue of the fact that Stuhlbarg has been cast as that story’s villain, Nicodemus West, we could see The Oath form a basis of the plot for Doctor Strange’s big screen debut.
However, there is much more fun theory, slightly out there theory to consider. With persistent rumours that Netflix’s planned Iron Fist series being replaced by one fronted by Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher, Doctor Strange is the perfect place to relocate Marvel’s mystical powered martial arts master. And really, who better to take on the role than Adkins? Of course, this is all speculation and fan boy wishful thinking. But with production marching forward, all should become clear in the coming months.
Doctor Strange is set for release November 4th 2016.
