We got our first look at Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, the hero of Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, earlier today, and now Entertainment Weekly has revealed more images from our return to J.K Rowling’s (also providing the script) wizarding world, including a new look at Scamander and the other main players Porpetina “Tina” Goldstein (Katerine Waterston), Queen Goldstein (Alison Sudol), and Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), and the movie’s main setting, 1920’s New York.
The American setting also brings with it a bit of a culture shock for those used to a very British brand of wizadry, with the movie introducing some new magical words and terms. First up, we have found out the American term for non-magical humans. Of course, we’ve known it to be Muggle (a word so beloved, it has made its way into the Oxford English dictionary) for all these years, but Rowling has told the publication American wizards use a totally different word, referring to people with no magical powers as 'No-Maj’. Pronounced no madge, it pretty much means “no magic”, and from the writer who brought us Severus Snape, Accio, and Wingardium Leviosa, it feels a bit too blunt and indelicate. But who knowns, it could grow on us by the time the first movie of a planned trilogy comes our way on November 18th 2016.
