As both a means to kickstart a new franchise and a good movie in general, this Summer’s Fantastic Four reboot failed miserably, and while it’s $160 million haul in the worldwide box office isn’t anything to sneeze at, it is still far less than what Fox needed the movie to make (it just about covers the $120 million budget). But despite that and the rumours about a troubled production, not to mention the sniping between the studio and director Josh Trank, a sequel has remained on course for its June 9th 2017 release date, announced well before the first movie hit our screens. That is until now. Quietly and very unceremoniously, the movie has been removed from Fox’s release schedule. Of course, this has happened before with movies that have been eventually released (Jurassic World and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed to name but two), but I can’t shake the feeling that this is the last we’ll hear of a Fantastic Four movie for a while. The property will probably be wheeled out again for another reboot once the ill will created by this one has long faded away, but for now, I see Fox putting all their efforts into the X-Men universe.
