Even with Fast & Furious 8 (out April 4th 2017) said to kick off one final trilogy to close out the series, it looks like the high octane world of Dominic Toretto and the rest of his petrolhead family won’t be going anywhere soon with Vin Diesel dropping hints that Universal are looking to take the Fast & Furious franchise the way of Marvel and build a series of spin-offs out of it. Speaking to variety, Diesel puts it as follows:
We’ve written out story lines for various characters. We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.
Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley further confirmed it, saying that there were indeed talks about expanding the franchise, and that there is “room to bring characters in and out”. As for what characters, well, Diesel’s Toretto seems like a safe bet, but he already dominates the main movies, so building another movie around him may seem a bit like overkill. Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs' is really a no-brainer, the combination of his star power and Hobbs' role as a Diplomatic Security Service agent having ready made action franchise written all over it. Depending how well Wonder Woman is received in both Batman v Superman and her own solo series, we could also see Universal try to coax Gal Gadot back into the fold (after she was last seen tumbling to her death on the world’s longest runway) and building a prequel series around her character Gisele’s time as a Mossad agent. With the abundance of characters the series has, there is any number of ways an expanded universe could go down.
