Beginning life has Prometheus 2, Ridley Scott’s return to the universe he kickstarted with Alien was recently announced to have a name change, being rebanded as Alien: Paradise Lost and putting the so far unrelated prequel series firmly back in the realm of the Xenomorphs (and putting paid to Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 in the process). Now, it looks like it will be getting a second name change, with Ridley Scott dropping the new title during a conversation about The Martian at the AFI Film Festival (via Cinemablend):
‘I was going to be doing what will be called ‘Alien: Covenant,’ which starts shooting next February, and we were struggling then with the screenplay there and then there was a phone call, somebody saying, ‘Listen, we’ve got this thing which is completely written called ‘Martian,’ and I said, ‘Huh.’ And I sped read it in an hour and by mid-afternoon, I talked to Fox and said, ‘I need to talk to ‘Drew [Goddard]…’
The movie won’t be released till 2017, so it isn’t a surprise the title is still not set in stone, but the titles we’ve being privy to so far indicate this new sequel will continue the quasi-religious theme of humanity meeting its makers began in Prometheus. Paradise Lost was a direct reference to John Milton’s epic poem of original sin and the fall of man, while Covenant in biblical terms means an agreement between humanity and god. No matter what the story turns out to be, don’t be surprised if you see the return of proto-Alien, the Deacon.
No matter what it ends up being called, the Prometheus sequel will come our way in 2017, with no concrete release date given as of yet.
