As to be expected, Star Wars and Marvel movies are going to go on forever. Disney chairman Bob Iger spoke to the BBC and said when it comes to Star Wars “There are five Star Wars films – four more with Episode VII: The Force Awakens – that are in varying stages of development and production. There will be more after that, I don’t know how many, I don’t know how often.”
And when it comes to Marvel movies? Iger says "“Marvel, you’re dealing with thousands and thousands of characters – that will go on forever.”
For fans, obviously, this is a good thing isn't it? The words too much of a good thing don't seem to be relevant in Hollywood, and ultimately, as long as people spend their cash at the box office, these movies will indeed continue forever. With release dates getting full of franchises, the room for original film is getting more and more limited. Which is another problem that Hollywood still has to address.
I do wonder though, in ten years time or so, how the cinema landscape will have changed? Will it survive 4K streaming? Smaller release windows between theatrical and home release? Or will same day home release become cheaper and the norm? And with the TV and the likes of Netflix's original series gaining fans by the planet load, the fight for your money is on.
