This may be something most fans of these movies may overlook, but Hans Zimmer has been composer of every DC Comics movie since he gave us the epic sure to Batman Begins. That was in 2005, so for eleven years the legendary composer (and one time collaborator with The Buggles, let us never forget that) has been providing the soundtrack for Batman and Superman’s big screen adventures (as well as The Amazing Spider-Man 2). But it seems like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may have been one movie too many, with Zimmer telling the BBC that he is officially retiring from the superhero music game, saying:
“I did ‘Batman Begins’ with Chris [Nolan] 12 years ago, so ‘The Dark Knight Trilogy’ might be three movies to you, to me it was 11 years of my life”
Zimmer was initially reluctant to return for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel follow-up, which he collaborated on with Junkie XL, and it seemed to be the straw that broke the camels back, with Zimmer adding:
“This one was very hard for me to do, to try to find new language”
While no further superhero movies will bear the Zimmer mark of quality, he is not walking away from big tentpole movies entirely, with Ron Howard’s Inferno and Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk on the horizon. As for who Warner Bros. could replace him with, Junkie XL seems like an obvious choice. His work with Zimmer on Dawn of Justice did produce some epic pieces of music, Wonder Woman’s theme chief among them, and he has proven himself as a composer with Mad Max: Fury Road and Deadpool.
