While we’re all still raving about Deadpool and the fact it has changed the landscape when it comes R-rated comic book movies, we’re all forgetting the criminally under-rated adaption that could have done it four years earlier. Praised by fans and critics alike, 2012’s Dredd went on to perform poorly at the worldwide box office, putting the nail in the coffin of any future adventures for Karl Urban’s gruff futuristic law enforcer. The fan outcry for a sequel has been mind blowing, with petitions and the ‘Day of Dredd’, where fans were encouraged to buy or stream a coy of the movie to persuade studio heads at the hunger for a follow-up, trying to get the ball rolling. Unfortunately, this all added up to nothing, with screen writer Alex Garland telling the bitter truth that not better how many Blu-Ray’s or DVD’s were bought, no studio would green light a sequel.
Coming off this piece of information, the fan campaign has changed tack, with petitions for a Dredd television series, with Netflix, or any streaming service, being the preferred platform (think about it, it would allow for a lot more creative freedom, and keep the violence and tone of the original intact). This is where Dredd himself, Karl Urban, comes in, tweeting the following when responding to a fan mock-up of what Dredd would look like on Netflix:
With what both studios are doing right now with their original programming, House of Cards and Transparent especially, a Dredd series would be one hell of an addition. The fan base is there, and, be it on t.v. or the big screen, the movie does deserve a follow-up.
