Our friends in America finally got their chance to see Captain America: Civil War at the weekend, and fans came out in force with Marvel Studio’s Phase Three opener banking an estimated $181 million at the box office, making it the fifth-highest American opening in industry history and giving the studio four of the top six openings of all time. Add this haul to an overall international gross of $496 million, and it has brought in a whopping $678 million worldwide only ten days after hitting our screens. At this stage, the movie reaching the coveted $1 billion dollar mark looks likely.
Speaking of $1 billion dollars, the movie’s impressive opening in the States helped Walt Disney Studios surpass that mark in terms of domestic sales in 128 days, shattering the previous record set last year of 165 days. It also puts the studio at $2 billion international and $3 billion global, surpassing industry records set in June of last year. All in all, it was a very good weekend for the House of Mouse.
