Confronted with the negative reviews for his latest weirdest, Yoga Hosers, Kevin Smith issued a statement that he isn’t making movies for audiences anymore. Instead, he’s focusing on ideas and concepts that appeal to him, and, y’know, you’ve got to admire him for that. Sure, he’ll play in someone else’s sand box every so often (his episode of The Flash airs in America tonight), but when it comes this feature films, it’s his show and no one else’s, a sentiment that’s been brewing in him since he decided to market Red State himself and get some distance between him and the big studio system. So, anyway, that preamble is a way of introducing the first trailer for Yoga Hosers, the tale of two girls saving their town from living Nazi bratwurst. From that brief synopsis alone, you have all you need to know, and if you enjoy trashy b-movies (which I do immensely), you might just have a good time with this one.
While not giving much away, I find the promo strangely charming and that’s all down to the leads, Smith’s daughter Harley Quinn and Johnny Depp’s Lily-Rose. They share a nice chemistry and do seem to be this movie giving it their all. As for Depp himself, Guy LaPointe was the worst part of Tusk, so having him reprise the role here is something I’m totally against. Will Yoga Hosers be a masterpiece? Hell no, but it does promise to be a shedload of weird, trashy fun, and sometimes that is all you need.
Following a tour of the movie by the man himself, Yoga Hosers hits cinemas in America on July29th. No word on a release date on this side of the pond as of yet.
