With next year’s Kong: Skull Island, Warner Bros. are sowing the seeds for a Godzilla/King Kong showdown in 2020. But we’ll have to wait a bit longer for the second step on the road, Godzilla, to giant monster battle royale with Gareth Edwards’ sequel being delayed from June 8th 2018 to March 22nd 2019. This takes the movie out of the way of Transformers 6, said to be a Bumblebee spin-off, and makes sure it doesn’t go up against the as yet untitled Jurassic World sequel, due out June 22nd 2018. Godzilla vs Kong stays in 2020, now given a concrete release dat of May 29th.
Personally, I’m a bit bummed that we have to wait for the sequel, and we can debate till the cows come home as to the reason for this date change, but it just seems like reshuffling to get it out of the way of two big draws, and make it perform as best as it can. Recent years have seen the Summer season come earlier and earlier, and the likes of Cinderella, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Batman v Superman have shown how well a movie released in this time can perform.
