You don’t know the name Colm McCarthy, but if you’ve watched Doctor Who, Sherlock (namely the fantastic season three episode The Sign of Three), Peaky Blinders, or Ripper Street, you have probably seen his work, with the Scottish director amassing an impressive back catalogue of t.v. work. Now, he’s making the jump to feature films with The Girl with All the Gifts, based on the novel by M.R. Carey, a post apocalyptic thriller where a fungal infection has eradicated free will and turned most of the population into flesh eating ‘hungries’. The only hope appears to be a young infected girl who still maintains her free will, and may hold the key to a cure.
No one does the post apocalypse quite like the British, with The Girl with All the Gifts is another great example of that, playing up the hopelessness of this situation perfectly and filling each frame with a suffocating sense of dread. On top of that, the young cast is bolstered by a great ensemble of old hands, namely Glenn Close, Gemma Atherton, and Paddy Considine. Be sure to keep an eye out for this when it hits this side of the pond on September 23rd.
