Eight years after the last one, Friday the 13th is getting another reboot next year, and while it’s a safe bet to assume Jason Voorhees will once again be picking off the teens of Camp Crystal Lake, it seems that Mr. Voorhees might be getting a new origin, which might be a good idea since while everyone with a passing knowledge of the series knows Jason as the machete wielding hockey enthusiast, only die hard fans will remember that he didn’t start out that way. Talking to The Reel World (via Coming Soon), producer Brad Fuller shed some light on what scriptwriter Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) has in store for the 13th instalment in the series:
“Aaron’s story has great characters…You kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward … [It’s] an origin that no one has seen before. Obviously Pamela’s there, but it’s a little bit different from what you’ve seen before.”
Pamela, of course, is Jason’s mother, who plays a pivotal role in both Jason and the series’ story, and hopefully her appearance amounts to more than be shuffled off this mortal coil five minutes into the 2009 movie. If there was any justice, she would be a main player like she was in the original, but with Jason becoming the face of the franchise, fans may be a bit miffed if he doesn’t take pride and place at the the centre of the movie. Hopefully, whatever this new origin turns out to be it won’t involve demon worms. fans will know what I’m talking about. Fuller also addressed rumours that the new movie would be done found footage style, saying that while that was originally the plan he doesn’t think “that can exist in Jason Voorhee’s world”. After this piece of news came online, Birth.Movies.Death reported an interesting rumour that Jason’s dad, Elias Voorhees, would be playing a part in the new movie. While Elias hasn’t appeared in any of the movies so far, there was many a time where he almost did. He has played a part in a novelisation and several comic book stories, and while we have nothing concrete to support this piece of news at this time, it does make sense if this origin is going all the way back to the beginning.
