Getting to the big screen hasn’t been easy for Pacific Rim 2. It’s Summer 2017 release soon became a distant memory when Universal put it on the shelf, and then when it finally got up and running once more, original director Guillermo Del Toro vacated the directors chair in favour of Daredevil and Spartucus show runner Steven S. DeKnight, making his directorial debut. Del Toro is still involved behind the scenes, and while it’s a bummer he won’t be orchestrating the giant robot/giant monster smackdown this time round, it’s great to this sequel finally take shape. And taking shape it continues to do with the announcement that The Force Awakens’ John Boyega is swapping out a blaster for a gigantic Jaeger and taking the lead, playing the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost (he will also be taking on producer duties). Fingers crossed for the character getting a similarly awesome first name.
I don’t don’t know about you, but this is an amazing piece of casting. Boygea’s Finn was hands down one of the best things one of the best parts of The Force Awakens, and I can’t wait to see him bring that same infectious energy to the world of Pacific Rim. There’s no word on whether Elba, Charlie Humman, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and the rest of the original cast will be returning, but with production set to begin by year’s end, we’ll no doubt hear more casting news in the coming weeks and months.
